Tesla Model 3/Y battery degradation test results after 320,000 kilometers of driving released

On July 2, it was reported that one of the main reasons many people refuse to buy electric vehicles is because they are concerned about battery degradation, as the cost of replacing a power battery is indeed high. So how serious is battery degradation in electric vehicles in real life? Recently, an organization tested Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles that had been driven 200,000 miles (approximately 320,000 kilometers).

The results showed that the average battery degradation was 20%. If converted into mileage, this means that a vehicle with an original range of 500 kilometers would have a remaining range of 400 kilometers after driving over 300,000 kilometers. It is also worth noting that the report indicated that battery degradation tends to occur more rapidly in the first 100,000 kilometers, after which the rate slows down. Such test results are actually quite poor. According to Tesla's official claims, the average degradation after 320,000 kilometers is 15%. Of course, there are exceptions. Previously, a Model S from a Canadian rental company had driven over 500,000 kilometers with only a 12% battery degradation. It's worth noting that rental companies typically charge their vehicles at fast-charging stations.

Regarding the latest structural testing, many netizens remain skeptical because no specific calendar lifespan was provided. In fact, battery degradation is closely related to this aspect as well. Additionally, many domestic Tesla owners have shared their experiences. Some reported that after driving 100,000 kilometers, their battery health was still at 91%, meaning a 9% degradation, which they found acceptable. Others mentioned that their Model Y, after 260,000 kilometers, saw its range drop from 435 to 408 kilometers.

However, some have reported severe degradation, with a new car purchased in 2019 already showing 18% degradation two years ago, despite having driven only 90,000 kilometers and rarely using supercharging or fully charging the battery. Overall, battery degradation is indeed a widespread issue for electric vehicles, but even within the same model from the same brand, the extent of degradation can vary significantly between different owners.
