This time, you'll have to queue up to buy a Toyota! The new SUV is even more beautiful than the Audi Q5L, with fuel consumption of only 4.2L.
In 2024, Toyota is having a tough time in the Chinese market, with sales down 6.9%. Even its flagship model, the Camry, is struggling to keep up in the price war. However, Toyota's recent launch of the LAND HOPPER may help it regain its competitive edge in the market.
The front end of the LAND HOPPER features a bold design, with dual C-shaped headlights that break away from Toyota's traditional conservative style. The grille boasts a rich layered texture, while the air intakes on either side extend outward, exuding a sporty vibe. From the side, the flared character line may initially raise concerns about interior space, but upon sitting inside, one discovers that legroom and headroom are actually more spacious than those of the Audi Q5L.
The taillight assembly at the rear of the vehicle features a unique light strip design, which looks incredibly cool when illuminated at night. Many young people find it well worth the money. The touchscreen on the center console responds extremely quickly, comparable to a smartphone, and the voice assistant can even understand dialect commands, which is a particularly thoughtful feature.
The seats provide excellent support, offering the same level of comfort as a large sofa at home. However, the storage compartments in the front row are not very well designed, and items like phones and keys often end up crowding each other. Fortunately, the vehicle is well-equipped, with features like automatic braking and adaptive cruise control standard across all models, as well as a panoramic sunroof and wireless charging.
In terms of fuel efficiency, the LAND HOPPER only requires 4.2L of fuel per 100 kilometers, which is significantly better than the Q5L's 8L fuel consumption. Based on current fuel prices, the savings over a year could cover the cost of four Michelin tires. The E-CVT transmission is exceptionally well-tuned, delivering smooth power output. When starting, the electric motor engages silently, and when switching to hybrid mode at high speeds, there is virtually no perceptible jerking. Additionally, the electronic all-wheel drive system ensures the vehicle remains stable through corners, and in rainy or snowy conditions, its traction is more reassuring than Audi's quattro all-wheel drive system.
In terms of pricing, the LAND HOPPER offers significant competitive advantage. In the 200,000 to 300,000 yuan price range, the Q5L only offers a base model with fabric seats and manual air conditioning, while the LAND HOPPER provides leather seats and an intelligent driving package. Furthermore, Toyota models have consistently demonstrated excellent residual value, and the LAND HOPPER is no exception. After three years, its residual value is at least 5% higher than that of the Audi Q5L.
Of course, as a brand-new model, consumers may have some concerns, such as whether the after-sales service network is sufficiently comprehensive or if there might be more minor issues in the future. However, Toyota has been deeply rooted in the Chinese market for 20 years, and with its mature system and extensive experience, these issues are likely to be resolved quickly.
After driving for so many years, I’ve seen countless consumers paying a premium for brand name alone. Take the Q5L, for example—even the base model requires you to pay extra for a backup camera, while the LAND HOPPER comes standard with Level 2 driver-assistance technology.
Choosing the LAND HOPPER can save you around 100,000 yuan in budget, which is enough to fuel two trips around China. As for the so-called “luxury feel,” the gap between joint-venture brands and luxury brands in interior design is narrowing. The LAND HOPPER's wraparound cockpit with 64-color ambient lighting ensures you won't lose face when picking up clients at night.
Toyota has clearly hit the nail on the head with this model: it’s all about having a car that looks good while also prioritizing practicality. If your budget is around 300,000 yuan, would you rather go for a luxury brand’s badge or a versatile SUV that’s both reliable and fuel-efficient?
